ATS systems scan for platform names. If you have used QuickBooks, SAP, and Xero — list all three explicitly. "Accounting software" scores zero.
"CPA" and "Certified Public Accountant" are different strings to ATS. Write "CPA (Certified Public Accountant)" to capture both. Same for ACCA, CIMA, and ACA.
"Managed accounts" is weak. "$50M balance sheet", "consolidated 12 entities", "led a team of 6 accountants" — scope signals seniority to both ATS and hiring managers.
"Prepared financial statements in accordance with IFRS" scores higher than "followed international standards." Standards bodies, frameworks, and regulators are high-value ATS keywords.
Tax and audit are distinct competency clusters in ATS scoring. If you have experience in both, make sure keywords from each category appear in the relevant experience bullets.
"Prepared reports" vs. "owned month-end close" signal different levels. Read the posting carefully and use the same action verbs and seniority language the employer chose.

Accounting is the most credential-gated field this site covers, and ATS filters are configured accordingly.
Write both "CPA" and "Certified Public Accountant" — postings use either, filters match literally, and you can't know which form the recruiter typed. Same for state licensure ("CPA, licensed in Texas") when the posting requires it: that's a hard filter, and the hard-mismatch detector on this site treats it the same way.
Software strings are versioned: QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop appear as distinct requirements; NetSuite, SAP (often "SAP FICO"), and Workday Financials are separate strings. Name the ones you've actually closed books in.
The metric that outperforms every adjective: close-cycle time. "Reduced monthly close from 8 days to 5" beats "detail-oriented team player" in every screening system built, human or machine.
Vocabulary differs by track. Public accounting postings say audit engagements, PBC lists, workpapers; industry postings say month-end close, reconciliations, variance analysis. If you're switching tracks, translate your bullets into the target track's vocabulary — the experience is transferable, the words are not.
Ordered by how often they actually appear in postings rather than by convention: process vocabulary first (audit, reconciliation, process improvement and automation, journal entries, month-end close, financial statements, accruals), then credentials, where CPA appeared in 67.5% of the postings we counted alongside Big 4 and public accounting experience, then standards (GAAP, internal controls, SOX, revenue recognition, ASC 606, IFRS), and systems last - the ERP the employer names matters more than the one you know best, with NetSuite at 36.6% and QuickBooks at 0.8%. That ordering comes from in-house accounting teams at technology companies; public practice, government and small-business bookkeeping are not represented, and UK postings use IFRS, VAT and ACCA, CIMA or ACA in place of the US equivalents.
Lead with process vocabulary rather than job titles. Postings repeat audit, reconciliation, month-end close and journal entries, so those words need to appear in the bullets instead of being implied by a role name. Name the ERP you actually worked in, and keep one column - accounting resumes often set figures in tables, which parse out of order.
No applicant tracking system publishes a required score. Across the 123 accounting postings from 49 companies we counted, audit appeared in 85.4% and reconciliation in 74%, while NetSuite appeared in 36.6% and QuickBooks in 0.8%. A resume that leads with small-business software and leaves out process vocabulary scores badly against most of these postings however strong the experience behind it.
